Life Reflections

Mrs. Annette Pompey Peterson was born on April 28, 1947.  She was born in Darlington County to the late Raymond Pompey and Earline Boston Pompey.  She departed to her glorious meeting with our Heavenly Father on Friday, February 11, 2022.

The second oldest daughter of four children, she attended the public schools of Darlington County and graduated from Mayo High School, Class of 1965.

On May 28, 1966, Annette married Henry “Pete” Peterson.  They raised three beautiful children together and as husband and wife, they continued to love and support one another until his death.  Annette was a devoted and loving wife, mother, nana, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend.  She had close relationships with many extended family members, including her cousins, Dorthey, Joan and Rosa.

Annette was raised in a God-fearing home and loved to worship and serve the Lord.  Baptized at an early age, she began her Christian journey at Snow Hill Baptist church in Florence, SC where she served as a Sunday School teacher.  She later joined Wayside Chapel Baptist Church and faithfully served on the Usher Board.  Annette unselfishly fulfilled many roles in the church. For example, she often used her seamstress skills to create costumes and décor for different church activities and functions.  Annette always looked forward to the Annual Taste of Wayside where she would serve as one of the planning team committee members. She loved reading the bible and attending bible study. She loved her church and her church family.

Annette worked in the community at Jett’s Tailor from 1970 to 1995.  Jett’s Tailor was an alteration business owned by her sister and upon the passing of her sister in 1995, she purchased the business and changed the name to Darlington Alterations.  Annette could create and design any clothing you could imagine. Although she was an exceptional seamstress in July 2021, she retired and closed the shop after 51 years of service.

Annette had a giant personality and a generous heart.  She enjoyed cooking and baking.  Her specialty cakes were coconut, pineapple, and chocolate and her specialty pies were sweet potato and coconut. She was an avid sports fan whose interests ranged from tennis to hockey but she was most passionate about the Dallas Cowboys.

Annette, affectionately known to her family and friends as “Annie,” will always be remembered for her beautiful spirit, consistent acts of kindness, sincere sense of humor, and expressions of love for her family.  She was adored by the love of her life, the late Henry “Pete” Peterson, cherished by her children, dearly loved by her grandchildren, and well-respected by her friends and the community.  Her love for her family and her devotion to them was never failing.  She had a caring and comforting spirit and she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Proceeded in death are her husband, Henry “Pete” Peterson; granddaughter, Ayanna Peterson; her father, Raymond Pompey; mother, Earline Boston Pompey; stepmother, Beatrice Bonaparte Pompey; sister, Sylvia Pompey Jett and brother, Carnell Pompey.

Left to cherish her precious memories are her children, Vanecisia Peterson of Columbia, SC, Kenyatta Peterson of Darlington, SC, Alvin (Nekol) Peterson of Bowie, MD; grandchildren, Seth Mingo of Columbia, SC, Nailah, Aliya and Nia Peterson of Bowie, MD; sister, Jeanette (Paul) Bradley of Darlington, SC; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth (Cecil) Bacote, Alice Peterson and Patrice Brown all of Darlington, SC; Eula (Samuel) Fowler of College Park, GA; brothers-in-law, Matthew Peterson, Dennis Peterson, Jimmy (Vera) Peterson and James (Julia) Peterson all of Darlington, SC; Levern (Barbara) Peterson of Charlotte, NC, John (Linda) Peterson of Orlando, FL; aunts, Salley Price of Lamar, SC, Rosa Mae Jackson of Darlington, SC and a special cousin Bannie (Johnny) Ford of  Lakewood, NJ and a host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and friends. She will be greatly missed by the many people who knew and loved her.
