Celebrating The Essence
Of
Ms. Edith Lee Bacote
September 13, 1950 – August 14, 2025
Ms. Edith Lee Bacote was born on September 13, 1950, to the late Handy Bacote, Sr., and Zilphia Lee Bacote. On August 14, 2025, she peacefully transitioned from labor to reward in the comfort of her home.
Edith was the embodiment of the Proverbs 31 woman—her life was a living testimony of faith, service, and love. A devoted servant in her church, home, and community, she consistently extended her hands and heart to others. Whether caring for the sick, assisting those in need, or offering wise counsel, Edith always carried herself with grace, humility, and a spirit of compassion.
At a young age, Edith was baptized and became a faithful member of New Providence Missionary Baptist Church. She served in numerous capacities throughout the years, including church secretary, Sunday school teacher, missionary, and member of both the Pastor’s Aide Ministry and the Gospel and Young Adult Choirs. Beyond her church walls, she also served as secretary of the Florence and Darlington County Singing Convention and was honored as Miss NAACP for the Darlington branch.
Edith had a deep love for powerful preaching and uplifting gospel music. She praised freely and fervently, unashamed to rejoice in the Spirit. Even as her health declined, her soul continued to echo a resounding “yes, Lord”—a testimony of unwavering faith and endurance.
She received her early education through the Darlington County Public School System and was a proud graduate of the Mayo High School Class of 1969. She later attended Florence-Darlington Technical College, becoming a certified nursing assistant. In 1976, Edith began her healthcare career at Florence General Hospital. A year later, she joined Wilson Clinic and Hospital (now McLeod Regional Medical Center), where she faithfully served until her retirement in 2013 after 36 years of dedicated service.
Edith leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. She is survived by her sisters, Mary Bacote-Norkhird of Tamarac, Florida, and Jeannette Shaw of Columbus, Georgia; nieces she lovingly raised as her own—Jeanise, Matilda, Earnestine, Benita, and Stephanie; and her beloved grandnieces and nephews—Kirby, Kristein, Eddie, and Bridgett. Also mourning her loss are the great-nieces and nephews she helped raise—Kaleigh, Kai’leigh, Peyton, Taylin, Kayci, Stormi, Logan, and Chase. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Bertha Bacote of Thomasville, North Carolina, and a host of other great-nieces, nephews, cousins, and loved ones.
In addition to her parents, Edith was preceded in death by her sister, Maxine B. Cooper; her brother, Handy Bacote, Jr.; and her niece, Teacka N. Bacote.
Faithful to the Finish
Matthew 25:21 (NIV)
“Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness.”
Please keep the Bacote family in your thoughts and prayers.
